Dr. Lai Sin Yuan and Team Publish in Materials Today Sustainability

2024-04-04

The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Assist. Prof. Dr. Lai Sin Yuan from the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for the recent publication in Materials Today Sustainability, an SCI Q1 journal with the latest impact factor of 7.8.

This is a collaborative research involving Prof. Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The collaboration stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) established between Xiamen University Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia from 2022 to 2025.

Titled “One-pot synthesis of regenerative calcium counterions from waste chicken eggshells for SO2-to-sulfur reduction, the research aims to tackle environmental concerns and protect human health by reducing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. It introduces a sustainable approach that utilizes calcium-based materials derived from eggshell waste for catalytic thermal reduction of SO2 to elemental sulfur. This innovative method not only offers a sustainable solution for converting SO2 into valuable sulfur commodities but also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12 on Sustainable Consumption and Production.

By harnessing calcium sulfide derived from eggshell waste, this research demonstrates the potential for environmentally friendly practices to address industrial emissions and promote sustainable resource utilization.

The published full research article can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.mtsust.2024.100749.

The project is ?nancially supported by the Ministry of Higher Education through the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS/1/2019/TK02/XMU/ 03/1) and Xiamen University Malaysia Research Fund (XMUMRF/2019-C4/IENG/0019; XMUMRF/2020-C5/IENG/0029).

Dr. Lai Sin Yuan holds the position of Assistant Professor at the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia. Her research focuses on green chemistry, materials science, heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis, and biofuels, with a keen emphasis on environmental sustainability and the circular economy. Dr. Lai is actively recruiting Master's students to join her research team. Individuals interested are encouraged to reach out to her directly at [email protected].
